Life changes in the time it takes to meet a person; change a thought; or, in my case, pick up a magazine.

It was 4 A.M. on a snowy day in Maine when I entered the gym, and in the time it took to put my sneakers on, I noticed a magazine called Best Ever You sitting on the shelf next to me. Intrigued by the title, and of course procrastinating from getting on with my workout, I began to read it. Immediately, I was struck by the simple and yet powerful message within: being your best you. The articles were relatable, not overly theoretical, and I felt eager to meet the founder of a company that for me, as a therapist, captured what I had worked years to help others understand: that simple, small steps taken in a moment can lead to lasting, positive life changes.

One workout and a phone call later, I met Elizabeth.

Because Dr. Katie made that phone call (a GBM) to me, we in turn grew to become friends and colleagues who wrote a book together. From starting the radio show to writing this book, we’ve made a series of GBMs and leaps of faith.

This book alone has been our lesson in being fully present while also starting somewhere to realize a goal. We’ve had to keep the faith; learn how to use commas properly; remove extra apostrophes and exclamation marks; and endure the drama that goes with really believing in our innocent, enthusiastic, and joyful inner-kid voice that insists on using crayons when the moments scream for them. It’s about never, ever giving up.

Dr. Katie knows how incredibly frustrated I’ve been during the writing process at times, but writing a book is something that I really wanted to do. The original title and contents of this book were inspired by a sketch I drew in my journal and some journal entries I wrote called “Percolate: The ABCs of Life.” With every ounce of energy I had, I turned my writings into a book titled The ABCs of Life. To do that, I sketched with crayons (for real) and wrote with markers, cut out pictures from magazines, and really tapped into my youth. My goal was to show how I’ve overcome obstacles in my life, along with other people’s experiences about overcoming their own challenges. Most of all, I wanted to stress the importance of living in the moment and tapping into the power of “us and we” through the Percolate Points.

Thinking that I had hopefully written the next bestseller, I e-mailed the manuscript and the original crayon-sketched cover to seven friends for feedback: Lisa Tener, Deb Scott, Gabe Berman, Michelle Phillips, Gary Kobat, Dr. David Fraser, and Dr. Katie. And after a few days, my friends’ responses filtered through:

Lisa’s response: “How tied are you to the whole ABCs thing? We need to somewhat start over and get you connected to your muse.”

Deb’s response: “You lost me in the middle of the book.”

Gabe’s response: “No man is ever going to pick up this book with that title and cover.
